Assistant Professor
A visual thinker and curious listener, Dana was the kind of kid who hid tape recorders around the house to learn what people were talking about.
Since then, Dana has channeled her curiosity into her work as a product and service designer, primarily centered on health care––where the problems, needs, and goals, are layered, complex, and people-centered. She has worked within the Mayo Clinic, Kaiser Permanente, and UCSF. She currently has her own consulting practice and is Design Director for Aspen Labs. Recent clients include the Center for Care Innovations, the Sound Health Network, and the Veterans Health Administration.
Dana’s projects have ranged from the design of patient symptom dashboards to the prototyping of new hospital spaces and adaptive furniture. She has developed iconography and data visualization for patient education, implemented system-wide employee recognition platforms, and developed multimedia educational materials on the delivery of equitable gender-based and gender-affirming care.
Dana has also designed and delivered skill-building and mentoring programs for health care providers to enable them to apply the design process on their own to their most gnarly challenges.
Dana received her BA in Architecture from Smith College and MFA in Industrial + Interaction Design from CCA. She has also taught at Cal State East Bay, UC Berkeley, and California College of the Arts. Dana has taught classes on Interaction Design Foundations, Storytelling, Design Research, Information Design, Game Design, and Health Care Design.
Dana has never loved a job as much as she loves teaching and working with students. She treats every class like a design challenge––creating classroom experiences where she hopes students find a rewarding outlet for their own curiosity.
